About
Julie should talk more in class.”
“Julie’s marks would improve if she contributed more in class.”
So said frequent school reports all through infants and primary school, but none of these teachers knew what my parents in their infinite wisdom instinctively did; I was listening. Like a human sponge, I was absorbing all of the facts, details, lessons, and most importantly, stories that I was privileged to be exposed to every day of my childhood.
Four decades on, I'm still listening to the way people speak, how they interact and the stories they share and respond to. I combine this with extensive research and imagination to create oral stories that I share with different age groups and in various settings.
Oral storytelling is different to reading aloud. It uses no notes or scripts. As the American storyteller Doug Lipman expresses it, storytelling is "the transference of images from one mind to another". It's a story told to a live audience of one or many listeners, and in the best experiences, is a dynamic exchange of story - teller - listener/s - story. The storyteller "reads" the responses of the audience and adapts the story accordingly.

Storytelling has a multitude of applications: in a cosy family setting, in education (at all levels), in health settings, in organisations, in conveying the meaning of research data and in building communities. I have been privileged to share my stories and my experience in all of these settings over the years.
I would be honoured to share stories with your group. With an extensive repertoire of original stories and retellings of traditional tales, I can create a storytelling program or workshop specific to your needs and themes.
Perhaps you are a new storyteller or someone who would like to begin sharing stories but just need a bit of assistance to craft your story and prepare it for telling. Together we can discover what your story is really about, how to create the best version of it to convey the meaning that you want and how to share your story in the most effective way.
